Altar Servers

Coordinator:  Maria Raymundo

The ministry of altar servers or acolytes, in the catholic church is unique. Other than the priest and deacons, no one else can participate so closely in the preparation of the Eucharist. Altar servers carry the cross, processional candles, hold the missal book for the celebrant, present the bread, wine, and water to the celebrant during the preparation of the gifts, and wash the hands of the celebrant. They have the upmost importance to assist the priest and deacon as necessary.

The presence of an altar server is so important that even Pope John Paul said to a group of Altar Servers in 2001:

“ The altar server has a privileged place in liturgical celebrations. Those who serve at Mass present themselves to a community. They experience from close at hand that Jesus Christ is present and active in every liturgy. Jesus is present whenever the community gathers to pray and give praise to God. Jesus is present in the words of Sacred Scripture. Jesus is present above all in the Eucharist, under the appearances of bread and wine. He acts through the priest who celebrates Holy Mass and administers the sacraments in persona Christi [in the person of Christ].

Therefore, in the liturgy you are far more than mere  “helpers of the parish priest”. Above all, you are servants of Jesus Christ, the eternal High Priest. Thus, you altar servers especially are called to be young friends of Jesus. Strive to deepen and foster this friendship with him. You will discover that in Jesus you have found a true friend for life.

Who may serve?

At the parish of St. Anthony it does not matter the age, albeit a young person or older, those who wish to serve the Lord and their community are invited to serve. We provide training sessions so that each server will be able to perform all duties and responsibilities.

Before one may serve at the altar, He or She:

  • Must have received the First Communion.

  • Regularly attend mass.

  • Mature enough to understand their responsibilities and to carry them with appropriate reverence.

Once prepared, the server will be assigned with an experienced server to serve in the celebration of mass.

  • The server has to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the celebration to prepare the credence table.

  • Please make sure to bring your Alb with you in case an altar server does not show up.

  • Always keep your Alb nice and clean.

  • Please come dressed presentable to serve the Lord.
